MPI Notification Template – Growing Low-THC Hemp at Home (NZ)

Do I Need to Notify MPI?

Under New Zealand’s updated hemp regulations, home growers of low-THC hemp may have obligations or interactions with the Ministry for Primary Industries (MPI), particularly if your cultivation relates to seed importation, biosecurity, or food production. Even where notification is not strictly required, contacting MPI proactively is good practice.

Use the template below to notify or enquire with MPI about your home hemp cultivation.

Key MPI Contact Points

  • General Enquiries: info@mpi.govt.nz or 0800 00 83 33
  • Biosecurity / Imports: If you are importing seed from overseas, contact MPI’s Biosecurity team before ordering.
  • Food Safety: If you plan to sell or commercially process hemp food products, additional food safety registration may be required.
  • Online Contact Form: mpi.govt.nz/contact-us

Tips

  • If your seeds are sourced domestically from a NZ supplier, biosecurity import rules generally do not apply.
  • Keep your seed purchase receipt and variety documentation — MPI may ask for proof of low-THC status.
  • If you are unsure whether your intended use triggers food safety obligations, it is always better to ask MPI first.
