- Year-round production — multiple harvests per year regardless of season
- Reduced pest pressure — controlled environments limit exposure to insects and pathogens
- Genetic consistency — ideal for seed production and breeding programmes where uniformity is critical
- Compliance and security friendly — easier to secure if you wish to ensure neighbors wont see plants.Â
Challenges
- High setup costs — lighting, HVAC, and infrastructure require significant upfront investment
- Ongoing energy costs — electricity is the biggest operational expense
- Smaller scale — limited by physical space and infrastructure
- Technical knowledge required — VPD, DLI, and nutrient management demand more precision
🔬 Key Considerations for Low-THC Hemp Specifically
When growing low-THC hemp (under the NZ threshold), a few factors become especially important regardless of method:
- Genetics matter most — start with certified, stable low-THC cultivars to stay compliant at harvest
- Isolation is critical — cross-pollination from neighboring grows or your own will push the plants energy to seed production. We have pollination confinement bags if this is an issue.
- Record keeping — Ensure MPI and Police are notified, keep records of correspondence and notes from where seed was purchased and when and how you grew.

Final Thoughts
For commercial fibre or grain production, outdoor growing in NZ's favourable climate is hard to beat. But for seed genetics, breeding programmes, and compliance-sensitive cultivation, indoor growing gives you the control you need to produce consistent, certifiable results. Either indoors or out will give you good results with quality genetics if your favored outcome is towards non pollinated biomass. New Zealand UV conditions in particular give very favorable results for phytocompound production when grown outdoors.Â
For indoor growing, at a bare minimum, you will need a grow tent, good quality soil mix (or soiless media if you are growing coco or hydro), Lighting (LEDs or CMH we recommend) a small fan for tent, a thermostat that also shows Relative Humidity and most importantly a good fertilizer, check out Seacliffe Organics or any of the hydro stores for advice and recommendations.
